Alcohol isn’t good for the heart, despite popular research studies. An average consumption of alcohol, like the “glass of red wine a night” prescription can provide some benefit for cardiovascular health but is by no means a method of medicating for the heart. Unfortunately, many people turn to alcohol as medication, that is, self-medication, and more often than not it is for issues of the heart, which are rooted in the mind. Drinking to ease stress, cope with depression, calm anxiety, deal with trauma, or cope with heartache turn people to drink excessively. People abuse alcohol for any reasons, celebration or mourning. When alcohol consumption turns out of control and evolves into alcohol abuse, it poses a more serious problem, a problem truly of the heart.
Heart problems, including heart disease and heart failure, are a leading cause of death around the world. Most years often, cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death for men and women the whole globe over. Loss of life to heart complications can come through heart attack, congestive heart failure, and atrial fibrillation, according to International Business Times.
The article cites compelling new research which indicates that alcohol abuse, specifically meeting the criteria for alcohol use disorder, creates a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. 14.7 million people from the age of 21 and above who had surgery, emergency, or inpatient care were analyzed. All of the patients were california residents. 1.8% of the patients were diagnosed with alcohol abuse. “The researchers discovered that this was associated with a twofold increased risk of atrial fibrillation, a 1.4-fold increased risk of heart attack and a 2.3-fold increased risk of congestive heart failure.” According to the article, these rates of increased risk are similar to those presented by patients with other risky factors. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and being obese are all high risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Each of these issues can be closely associated with alcohol abuse, especially high blood pressure.
Preventing heart failure as the result of alcohol abuse can be achieved by reducing alcohol consumption. Alcohol use disorder, on the other hand, can be a particular problem which can only be remedied through treatment. Abstinence ensures that alcohol abuse is never a problem again.
