People who need addiction treatment have several options when it comes to levels of treatment. The options include outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, and a partial hospitalization program. The person’s unique needs and level of addiction will determine the type of program needed.
While each type of program provides effective, proven therapies, PHPs are more structured than outpatient programs, but less restrictive than residential programs.
Partial hospitalization programs vary in their treatment methods and philosophies. However, they typically adhere to the same evidence-based practices. A PHP will require attending treatment four to eight hours per day, five days a week. Clients stay in a PHP for several weeks or months, based on their progress. During this time, they participate in various therapies and counseling sessions tailored to their unique situation.
At Design for Change Recovery, the primary goal of our partial hospitalization program is to help people develop practical coping skills to make them more capable of handling daily challenges. As a result, they will enjoy a healthier, more rewarding lifestyle.
Our clients also learn to manage their co-occurring mental health problems that may have influenced their substance use. They learn how to recognize and resist triggers, which is essential for relapse prevention.
Addiction consists of a range of contributing factors that play a role in substance use behavior. For this reason, treatment must address the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual elements to be effective.
Design for Change Recovery provides a comprehensive partial hospitalization program that focuses on whole-person healing. Our treatment modalities include, but are not limited to the following:
Detoxification is the first stage of the recovery process. We provide comprehensive, medically-supervised detox to ensure our client’s safety and comfort at all times. During detox, medication is available to help minimize withdrawal symptoms. The purpose of detox is to rid the body of cravings so the client can enter rehab. Design for Change provides both inpatient and outpatient detox to best serve our client’s needs.
Dual-diagnosis treatment is for individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. These disorders can exacerbate each other, so specialized treatment is needed. The most common co-occurring disorders are depression & addiction, trauma & addiction, or anxiety & addiction. In some cases, a person can suffer from more than one type of mental health issue together with substance use. Co-occurring disorders must be treated simultaneously for the best outcome.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based therapy utilized in addiction treatment and mental health disorders. The primary goal of CBT is to help people gain a better understanding and confidence in their own abilities. CBT also helps clients develop improved problem-solving skills. They learn to confront issues rather than avoid them. Additionally, CBT helps a person learn how to replace negative thoughts and behaviors with positive ones. With these skills, they can better control their emotions and behavior.
DBT is a form of talk therapy based on CBT but is for people who have difficulty regulating intense emotions. DBT treats PTSD, borderline personality disorders, substance use, eating disorders, depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideations.
Group counseling sessions allow clients to share their experiences with others who have similar circumstances. Participants talk, listen, and share advice and tips on how they cope with the recovery process. The group sessions are led by mental health professionals who are certified in group therapy techniques.
Individual counseling is a private, one-on-one session with the client and a therapist. The goal of individual therapy is to help clients recognize the impact their beliefs and emotions have on their behavior.
During motivational interviewing, clients are encouraged to express their reasons for wanting to change. Experts agree that this type of therapy is effective in helping people change destructive behaviors. Although motivational interviewing is a short term therapy, when used together with other therapies, the results can be significant.
MAT utilizes medications that block the euphoric effects of opioids and reduces cravings, thereby helping people avoid relapse. The most frequently used medications are methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. When used in tandem with counseling and other therapies, MAT is an effective treatment method.
Experiential therapy utilizes various immersive modalities to promote creative expression. This form of therapy treats anxiety, anger issues, depression, behavior disorders, and compulsive behaviors such as substance use, to name a few. The therapy sessions may involve music, art, role-playing, outdoor activities, and animal interactions.
Psychodrama therapy is a form of experiential therapy. It is a role-playing technique where clients reenact a troubling situation from the past in a safe environment. During each reenactment, the person learns more effective ways to respond to the situation.
Biosound therapy is a technique that uses low-frequency vibrations and guided imagery to bring about a state of relaxation. Typically, biosound therapy helps clients learn how to cope with fear, trauma, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
Holistic therapies help clients heal physically, mentally, and spiritually. The therapies include psychodrama, biosound, sociometry, exercise, nutrition, music and art therapy, and more.

Most insurance companies provide full or partial coverage for PHPs. However, the coverage varies depending on the policy and the PHPs services. At Design for Change, we are in-network with many major insurance providers to ensure you get the quality treatment you deserve.
