Substance use disorders are not all the same.  Some people have mild or moderate addictions, whereas others struggle with severe addictions.  Furthermore, many people with SUDs have underlying mental health disorders that worsen their substance use.  Due to these issues, addiction treatment programs provide various treatment options that align with each person’s situation.  Short-term rehab is one of the most commonly used types of treatment for many reasons.

What to Expect in Our Short-Term Programs

What Is Short-Term Rehab?

The overall goal of short-term rehab is to help people address the physical and mental factors of addiction.  It involves detox, counseling, skills training, support groups, and more.

The length of short-term rehab programs varies, based on the individual’s needs and the severity of the addiction.  Some short-term programs are completed in a few days, while others may last for several weeks.

As an outpatient program, short-term rehab allows clients to live at home so they can maintain work, school, or family obligations.  As an inpatient program, short-term rehab requires clients to remain at the facility 24/7 while undergoing treatment.

Treatment Options Provided by Short-Term Rehabs

Design for Change Recovery provides short-term rehabs tailored to each client’s specific needs.  Our program consists of an evidence-based, full continuum of care that promotes positive outcomes.  Some of the many therapies and activities included in our short-term programs are:

Detoxification – Not every client requires detox, but for those who do, we provide standard detox and medication-assisted detox, depending on their needs.  Our addiction specialists and medical personnel provide supervision and monitoring throughout the process to ensure safe, effective detoxification.

Group and Individual Therapy – Clients benefit from one-on-one therapy as they talk about their issues in private sessions with a therapist.  This form of therapy is great for people who aren’t comfortable sharing their feelings in a group setting.  Group therapy sessions provide peer support and help clients work on their communication skills, which are essential during early recovery.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy – CBT helps clients change negative thoughts and beliefs into positive, empowering ones.  They learn how their way of thinking may have influenced their substance use behavior. With this insight, they can cultivate strategies to avoid those thoughts and behaviors in the future.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy – DBT helps a person develop strategies for regulating emotions and managing distress.  It includes mindfulness and acceptance exercises.  This form of therapy is helpful for people who experience emotions intensely.

Motivational Interviewing – MI is an evidence-based therapy that focuses on behavior change.  Through talk therapy, clients explore and resolve ambivalence and insecurities to improve motivation.

Holistic and Experiential Therapies – These therapies promote well-being through various activities such as art therapy, yoga and exercise, outdoor adventures, meditation, and mindfulness exercises.

Relapse Prevention and Aftercare Services –  During short-term rehab, clients receive guidance on developing a relapse prevention plan for ongoing support and guidance.  This plan may involve support groups, outpatient therapy, and various community resources.

What Happens After Completing Short-Term Treatment?

Shortly before completing short-term rehab, clients undergo an evaluation.  This process helps treatment advisors plan an aftercare program to help clients transition into their next phase of recovery.  The aftercare plan serves to provide ongoing guidance and support during early recovery.

An aftercare plan may include, but is not limited to, the following:

Outpatient Therapy – Outpatient therapy involves regular counseling sessions to address issues and help clients develop effective coping skills for relapse prevention.

Sober Living Homes – Sober living homes serve as a temporary transition between rehab and independent living.  The facilities provide a sober, structured environment along with peer support and sober activities.

Support Groups – Attending support group meetings helps clients in early recovery connect with peers and gain ongoing support guidance.

Ongoing Medication Management – Clients who received MAT attend regular meetings with a healthcare provider.  The purpose of the meetings is to monitor the person’s progress in managing withdrawal symptoms and side effects and to adjust medications if necessary.

Skills Building and Continuing Education – Clients attend educational programs, workshops, and meetings that focus on personal development and addiction education.

Relapse Prevention – Relapse prevention strategies are crucial, especially in early recovery.  Clients must learn to recognize high-risk situations and implement the coping skills they have learned.  Strategies also include engaging in sober pursuits and self-care activities.

Is Short-Term Rehab Effective?

Studies show that people who engage in short-term rehab and an aftercare program for a total of three to six months are more likely to remain abstinent for the long term.

Short-term rehab provides the same evidence-based, personalized treatment offered in residential programs.  It is an effective alternative for individuals who can’t commit to long-term inpatient treatment.

Does Insurance Cover Short-Term Rehab?

Short-term rehab may or may not be covered by insurance.  It depends on the insurer and the type of coverage a client has.  In most cases, however, insurance will cover some of the costs of rehab, if not all.  Design for Change helps clients verify their insurance so we can create the highest-quality treatment plan possible.

We accept insurance from the following companies:

We realize not everyone has insurance so we assist them in making other financial arrangements. Our goal is to help each person get the quality addiction treatment they need.  Far too many people don’t enter treatment because they think they can’t afford it. Design for Change strives to provide affordable treatment for as many people as possible.
