As a health service company, Cigna helps more than 95 million people improve their overall health.  The company provides addiction treatment coverage as well as coverage for mental health disorders.  Since 2020, more than 1,500 people have used Cigna to attend drug and alcohol rehab.

Cigna has an extensive network of addiction treatment facilities that meet their qualifications to be an in-network treatment provider.  Design for Change, in Lancaster, California is proud to be among those chosen.  To qualify as a Cigna in-network treatment provider, we must consistently meet their high standards for client care and safety.  As a result, we work diligently to meet their expectations and provide the level of care that they require.

Addiction Treatment Coverage Provided by Cigna

Cigna Insurance typically covers partial or full costs associated with addiction treatment.  The amount of coverage is based on your plan and your state of residence.  However, if Cigna does not cover the cost of treatment, other options are available to you.  At Design for Change, our insurance specialists will work with you to arrange alternate payment methods.

Does Cigna’s Addiction Treatment Coverage Include Inpatient Rehab?

Yes.  Cigna does provide coverage for a range of treatment levels, including inpatient rehab.  The amount of coverage for inpatient rehab varies depending on several factors.  For instance, the level of care required, the location of the facility, and your Cigna health plan determine how much Cigna will cover.

Inpatient (residential) rehab is the best option for individuals who did not have success with an outpatient program, or for those who have co-occurring mental health disorders.  At Design for Change, we provide a secure, comfortable residential environment that promotes healing.  Our inpatient program consists of a wide range of evidence-based therapies such as:

Design for Change stands apart from other facilities because of our compassionate staff, our full continuum of care, and our commitment to helping clients achieve lasting recovery.

Does Cigna Cover Intensive Outpatient Rehab?

Cigna also provides partial or full addiction treatment coverage for intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).  The company also covers standard outpatient treatment and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs).

An IOP allows you to live at home or sober living home while receiving treatment.  IOPs typically meet three times per week for a total of 10 to 20 hours each week.  The schedule can be adapted to align with your home, work, or school obligations.  They provide evening or weekend sessions to accommodate your specific situation.

PHPs are less intensive than residential programs but more intensive than outpatient programs.  They are best suited for individuals with severe substance use problems, but who do not require 24/7 care.  PHP clients continue living at home or in a sober living facility during treatment.  Therapy sessions are held five days per week for several hours each day.

Which Cigna Plans Provide Addiction Treatment Coverage?

Cigna Insurance covers several treatments and services for substance use disorders, including detox, dual-diagnosis treatment, and medication assisted treatment.  How much is covered for these treatment methods depends on the type of plan you have.

The types of plans Cigna offers include health maintenance organization (HMO), exclusive provider organization (EPO), point-of-service (POS), and preferred provider organization (PPO).  The PPO and HMO plans generally include the following:

  • Bronze – Pays 60% of the costs for addiction treatment.
  • Silver – This plan pays 70% of the costs for addiction treatment.
  • Gold – Covers 80% of the cost for addiction treatment, but costs more than the bronze or silver plans.
  • Platinum – This is Cigna’s most costly plan, but it covers 90% of the costs for rehab.

The length of time Cigna will provide addiction treatment coverage depends on your health care plan and the level of care you require.

Is Suboxone Treatment Covered by Cigna?

Yes.  Suboxone treatment is one of the medications on many of Cigna’s approved drug lists.  It ranks as a high-tier medication that helps individuals cope with withdrawal symptoms during detox.  However, each Cigna plan is different.  With most plans, generic suboxone is priced in the first tier, meaning it is low in cost.  However, brand name Suboxone is in the third tier, meaning higher cost.

Suboxone treatment is used to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). It is a combination of naloxone and buprenorphine.  It helps negate the effects of opioids by blocking pain receptors.

You can learn more about Suboxone treatment coverage by logging in to your account online, or by letting one of our insurance specialists at Design for Change check your Cigna plan for you.  Also, you may find some of the answers you seek by checking our FAQ page.
